Mockingbird

Florida’s state bird is known for its bold personality and beautiful songs. You can spot them year-round perched on trees, fences, or powerlines, singing loudly to defend their territory. They forage in grassy areas, eating insects and fruit, and are often seen alone or in pairs. Mockingbirds are also fiercely protective. They are known to chase away other birds, pets, and even people who get too close to their nests!

This particular mockingbird came to us as a fledgling after being attacked by a cat. Sadly, cats are one of the biggest threats to wildlife. According to the American Bird Conservancy, free-ranging domestic cats kill about 2.4 billion birds every year in the U.S. To help protect birds like the Northern Mockingbird, please keep cats indoors—or if they must go outside, keep them closely supervised or on a leash.
