Turkey Vulture

The Turkey Vulture is a scavenger, meaning they feed on carrion (dead animals). They have a bald head to maintain better hygiene while feasting on carcasses. These amazing birds efficiently clean up carrion which reduces the spread of disease in the environment. They have several adaptations that enable them to feed on dead animals such as strong digestive and immune systems.

The most common time to see a Turkey Vulture is while driving, so look along the sides of highways and in the sky over open countryside. When hiking or traveling in hilly or mountainous areas, keep your eyes peeled for vultures. Sudden changes in topography allow for updrafts that the birds use to carry them into the sky.
